Authentic Malawi Chair - white

Origin: Malawi

Making and weaving Malawi chairs is a long, labour intensive process which takes months of planning. The Tilaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the chairs. The shrub grows in the summer months and the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried. Reed from the river is also incorporated into the manufacturing process.

In the winter months there is no material available to weave the chairs, therefore weaving is limited to eight months of the year.

The chairs are extremely hardwearing and strong. The natural chairs can get damp, but as the chairs are made from organic materials drying them quickly is recommended as mould can settle if they remain damp.

Note: This item is entirely hand crafted and purchased items may vary slightly to the image.
