Origin: Cameroon
The craftsmen of the Bamileke tribe in the grasslands region of Cameroon are famous for their skill at wood carving. The craftsmen create a variety of remarkable round stools with repetitive open work designs carved from a single tree-trunk. Great skill is required to hollow out the centre of a tree, leaving only a thin outside exterior, which is then carved into an intricate design. Used as a side table in a contemporary context, these stools were traditionally used as stools and were considered the most important piece of furniture in an African house. They are referred to as ‘king stools’ and the most intricate stools were used as seats for tribal chiefs.
As wood expands and contracts with moisture in the air, fine cracks can occur. Natural tables can be filled with wood filler.
