Making and weaving Malawi table is a long, labour intensive process which takes months of planning. The Tilaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the table. The shrub grows in the summer months and the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried. Reed from the river is also incorporated into the manufacturing process.
In the winter months there is no material available to weave the tables, therefore weaving is limited to eight months of the year.
The tables are extremely hardwearing and strong. The natural tables can get damp, but as the tables are made from organic materials drying them quickly is recommended as mould can settle if they remain damp.
