Making and weaving Malawi mirror is a long, labour intensive process which takes months of planning. The Tilaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the mirror frame. The shrub grows in the summer months and the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried. Reed from the river is also incorporated into the manufacturing process.
In the winter months there is no material available to weave the frames therefore weaving is limited to eight months of the year.
The mirrors are extremely hardwearing and strong. The natural mirrors can get damp, but as the mirror frames are made from organic materials drying them quickly is recommended as mould can settle if they remain damp.
